Designing for sound

Most spaces are designed for the eye, and rarely for the ear, yet sound shapes how a room feels, often before it registers.

Anya Molyviatis' woven structures treat acoustics as material: dense, three-dimensional textile absorbs and softens sound, quieting a room’s hard edges and gathering a stillness around the work.

Commissioned for a public lobby, this work treats textile as architecture. Woven densely and in three dimensions, its surface shifts color and light across the room, and because dense woven fiber absorbs and softens sound, it quiets the space it lives in.

A material that changes how a room feels, not only how it looks.

HOW IT IS MADE

Woven on a 40-harness dobby loom, each piece is built from thousands of mohair and cotton threads into a deep, three-dimensional waffle, a depth a standard loom can't reach. Soft and thick, the structure is as much an acoustic panel as an artwork: on the wall it absorbs and scatters sound, softening the room around it.
